International Black Cat Day
Celebrate International Black Cat Day with a Touch of the Paranormal
Every October 27th, we celebrate International Black Cat Day-a time to honor one of history’s most mysterious and misunderstood creatures. For centuries, black cats have been tangled in tales of magic, superstition, and the supernatural. Here in haunted St. Augustine, where ghosts seem to linger, there’s no better place to celebrate these enigmatic felines.
From Myth to Mystery
Black cats have walked through history side by side with witches, sailors, and storytellers. In medieval Europe, they were often seen as omens-sometimes of good luck, sometimes of dark magic. Sailors believed that keeping a black cat aboard could ensure safe passage across treacherous seas, while others feared crossing one’s path might bring misfortune.
Of course, we now know these sleek, stunning cats are simply-cats. But for those of us drawn to the mystical and paranormal, it’s hard not to feel a sense of appreciation for black cats.
St. Augustine’s Feline Spirits
Even here in St. Augustine, tales of spectral cats have found their way into local lore. There have been reports of a cat spirit that hangs out around the haunted Dixie House. Recently one of our tour guests snapped a photo of what seems to be a cat shaped glowing figure- these two photos were taken moments apart.

A Night to Celebrate the Mysterious
So this International Black Cat Day, take a moment to celebrate these beautiful, magical creatures. Adopt one if you can, support a local shelter, or simply spend time appreciating the legends they’ve inspired. Then, when night falls, come join us for a ghost tour through St. Augustine’s haunted streets. You never know what spirits-or spectral cats-you might encounter along the way.
